A good home is not always about adding as much new space as possible.

Often, the most useful changes come from understanding what is already there: how the rooms are used, where the light comes from, which spaces feel awkward, and which parts of the house no longer work as they should.

Some projects need an extension. Others need a careful reworking of the existing layout. Quite often, it is a combination of both.

At lvp architects, we are interested in this early part of the process. Before a design becomes fixed, we look at the existing building, the site, the planning context, the budget and the way the client wants to live. This helps test whether the right answer is more space, better space, or a more careful use of the space already available.

Small decisions can make a large difference. A better connection to the garden, a clearer entrance, improved storage, more natural light, or a calmer relationship between old and new parts of a house can change how a home feels day to day.

The aim is not to make every project look the same. Each house has its own character, constraints and opportunities. The design should respond to that, rather than forcing a standard solution onto it.

For us, a successful project is one that feels considered, practical and enjoyable to live in. It should improve the way the home works, while still feeling connected to the building it came from.
