Works at Holnest Farmhouse began progressively, initially focusing on carefully controlled roof and enabling works undertaken during the ecologically appropriate period between September and October. Following completion of these early-stage works and ecological clearance, the project has now progressed fully into the main construction phase progressing across both the existing farmhouse and the new extension works.
The project involves the substantial refurbishment, extension, and thermal upgrade of an existing rural farmhouse, carefully combining contemporary interventions with the character and fabric of the original building.
Early phases on site have included demolition works, structural opening works, groundworks, and preparing the existing house for the next stages of construction. As is often the case with older buildings, opening-up works have already revealed several existing conditions requiring close coordination between the design team, structural engineer, and contractor as the project develops.
Alongside the extension works, a significant aspect of the project centres around improving the long-term performance of the existing farmhouse. The proposals integrate upgraded insulation, improved glazing, airtightness measures, and new low-energy systems, helping modernise the home while respecting its age and original construction.
The project has required extensive technical coordination due to the complexity of integrating new construction with the existing building fabric, particularly around structural alterations, junction detailing, and balancing modern building performance standards within a traditional farmhouse structure.
As construction progresses, the relationship between the existing farmhouse and the new additions will begin to take shape, helping form a more connected, functional, and energy-efficient family home.
We look forward to sharing further updates as Holnest Farmhouse continues to evolve on site.
