No.22

Planning approval secured for the refurbishment and extension of a curtilage-listed outbuilding at No.22, Chesterton, Cambridge.

We are pleased to announce that permission has been granted for the careful refurbishment, thermal upgrade, and modest extension of a historic outbuilding located within the grounds of a residential property in Chesterton.

The outbuilding, while modest in scale, forms part of a sensitive historic setting. Early stages of the project focused on understanding the building’s evolution, condition, and contribution to the wider garden and main dwelling. The aim was not to transform the structure, but to enhance its usability while respecting its established character.

The approved proposals include internal reconfiguration and thermal improvements to enable year-round use, alongside a small, subservient extension to support its new function as a home gym. The extension has been designed to remain secondary to the original structure, ensuring the historic form continues to read clearly within the garden setting.

Material choices and detailing have been developed to sit comfortably alongside the existing fabric, with new interventions clearly legible yet sympathetic to the building’s heritage context.

The scheme was developed in close consideration of heritage and planning requirements, resulting in a balanced approach that supports contemporary use while safeguarding the long-term integrity of the outbuilding.

With planning approval now secured, the project will move forward into technical development. Further updates will follow as the next stage progresses.
